Can You Grow to Love Your Speaking Voice and Feel Confident in Business?

If You Cringe When You Hear Your Voice, You Are in Good Company
Hi friend, if you have ever played back a voice note, video, podcast clip or sales call and thought, “Oh no, is that really me?” I want you to know this straight away: there is nothing wrong with you.
So many midlife business women feel this. Women who are clever, experienced, warm, powerful and deeply capable. Women who can change lives with their work. Then they hear their own speaking voice and suddenly feel small, exposed, awkward or disappointed.
You may hear yourself and think you sound too quiet. Too fast. Too flat. Too tense. Too mumbly. You may worry that you sound less credible than you feel inside. You may even avoid recording content, speaking up in meetings, doing live videos, pitching your offer or following up with leads because you cannot bear the sound of your own voice.
Here is the truth I want to place gently in your hands: you can grow to love your speaking voice. You can feel kinder towards it. You can build a voice that feels steadier, clearer and more you. Your voice is allowed to change. Your relationship with it is allowed to change too.
Why Your Recorded Voice Can Feel So Uncomfortable
When you speak, you hear your voice in two ways. You hear it through the air, as other people do, and you also hear it through the vibrations inside your own head. Those inner vibrations often make your voice sound deeper and fuller to you.
Then you hear a recording, and suddenly you are hearing what others hear from the outside. To your ears, it may sound thinner, higher, flatter or stranger than expected. That shock can be real.
There is also the emotional side. Your voice carries history. If you were told to be quiet, stop showing off, calm down, speak properly, hurry up, slow down, or “don’t be too much”, your body may remember. Those old messages can sit in your jaw, shoulders, breath and throat.
Then add business pressure. You want to sound professional. You want people to trust you. You want your offer to land. You want to sound capable on sales calls, webinars, networking introductions and videos. That pressure can make your voice shake, dry up, speed up or lose warmth.
Your recorded voice may feel uncomfortable because you are hearing a mix of sound, memory, nerves and self-judgement. That can soften with practice, care and the right tools.

Your Voice Is Flexible, and Your Vocal Habits Can Change
Your voice is wonderfully flexible. It is a living part of you, shaped by breath, body, emotion, habit and choice.
Many of your current vocal habits were picked up over time. You may have learnt to speak quietly to stay safe. You may rush because you fear taking up too much time. You may tighten when people look at you. You may flatten your tone because showing excitement once felt risky.
These habits can change. Truly.
Your voice can become clearer. Your breath can support you more. Your pace can settle. Your tone can carry more warmth and authority. You can learn to speak in a way that helps people hear your value more fully.
This matters so much in business because your voice is part of how people experience your expertise. When your voice feels hidden, your message can feel hidden too.
The Five Common Voice Patterns That May Be Holding You Back
Over the years, I have seen certain voice patterns show up again and again, especially in women who have spent a long time being strong for everyone else.
The Mouse voice sounds small, quiet or apologetic. You may have strong ideas and years of experience, yet your voice slips into “sorry, can I just…” energy. People may miss the weight of what you are saying.
The Rabbit voice rushes. You speak quickly, race through your points and barely breathe. Your brain is ten steps ahead, and your listener is trying to keep up. This can happen when nerves rise and adrenaline kicks in.
The Deer voice freezes. Your throat tightens, your jaw grips, and your voice sounds strained when attention lands on you. You may know exactly what you want to say, then your body goes into alarm.
The Tortoise voice sounds flat or low-energy. You may care deeply, yet your voice sounds disconnected from that care. This can affect videos, presentations and sales conversations, because people need to feel your belief in what you offer.
The Butterfly voice drifts. Words get mumbled, endings disappear, and clarity fades. You may start strongly, then lose focus or volume as nerves creep in.
These patterns are information. They are signs your voice needs support, release and practice.
How Learning to Love Your Speaking Voice Helps Your Business
When you begin to love your speaking voice, or at least feel safer with it, your business can feel very different.
You speak up sooner in meetings. You introduce yourself with more ease. You explain your offer without shrinking. You lead calls with greater steadiness. You record content with less dread. You stop waiting for the perfect voice and start using the real one you have been building.
Voice confidence helps people hear your value. It helps your warmth come through. It helps your authority land. It helps your care feel present in the room.
And on sales calls, that care is gold. The fact that you want to sound calm and confident tells me you care about the person on the other end. That care is one of your greatest assets.
A calm nervous system creates a calmer voice. Your body tells the truth. When you prepare your body before you speak, your voice has a stronger place to come from.
A Simple First Step: Record a Short Voice Note
Here is a gentle place to begin.
Record a short voice note on a topic you know well. Keep it simple. Talk for thirty to sixty seconds about who you help, what you care about, or one tip your clients often need.
Then send it to a trusted friend, colleague or business buddy and ask, “What do you notice about my voice?”
Ask them to listen for warmth, clarity, knowledge, steadiness, care or trust. You may be genuinely surprised by the gap between what you fear people hear and what they truly hear.
You might be sitting there thinking, “I sound awful,” while they hear kindness, wisdom, calm, humour, strength or deep belief in your work.
Let their words in. Borrow their ears for a moment.
What to Listen for When You Hear Your Voice Back
When you listen back, please do it with care. This is information gathering. This is training your ear. This is building a relationship with your voice.
Notice your breath. Are you breathing low and fully, or grabbing tiny breaths at the top of your chest?
Notice your pace. Do you rush the opening? Do you speed up when you talk about money or your offer?
Notice your volume. Can people hear you easily?
Notice your tone. Where do you sound warm, connected and present?
Notice your clarity. Are you finishing words? Are your sentences landing?
Notice pauses. Are you giving yourself space to think?
Notice tension. Is your jaw tight? Are your shoulders lifted? Is your throat doing too much work?
Ask yourself two kind, honest questions:
“Where do I sound most connected?”
“Where does my voice start to hide?”
Those answers are a beautiful starting point.
Small Voice Practices That Build Confidence Over Time
You do not need a huge routine to begin. Small daily practices can create real change.
Before a sales call, meeting or video, try my Sigh of Relief. Take a breath in and let it out as a long, slow, audible sigh. Let your jaw drop. Do it twice. You can do it in the bathroom before you go on camera if you need to.
Then hum gently for about thirty seconds. Mmmmmm. Feel the buzz around your lips. This wakes up your voice and helps settle your system.
Before you speak, take a fuller breath. Slow the first sentence. Open your mouth a little more than usual. Let the final word of your sentence land.
Release your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Feel your feet on the floor.
Then say one key business message out loud each day. Your introduction. Your offer. Your value statement. A sentence you want to say on a sales call. Say it with your whole body. Say it until it feels familiar in your mouth.
And before important conversations, remind yourself why you love what you do. Think of a client you have helped. Think of the difference your work makes. When you connect with your purpose, your voice carries that.
The Tough Love Bit: Your Voice Needs Use, Care, and Repetition
Here is the loving truth: your voice needs to be used.
Waiting until you feel fully ready can keep you quiet for years. Waiting until you love every recording can keep your message stuck inside you. Waiting until your voice feels perfect can rob people of the help you are here to give.
Confidence grows through repeated safe practice, honest feedback and the willingness to be heard.
Use your voice in small ways every day. Record the voice note. Practise the introduction. Say your price out loud. Speak your offer to the wall, the dog, the mirror, your friend. Let your body learn that being heard is safe.
Your work deserves to be spoken about now
When Support Can Help You Hear What Is Possible

If you would love help with this, I invite you to a one-to-one conversation with me. We will look at where your voice is now, what you want it to feel like, and how your voice can support your business goals.
You may be much closer than you think.
Yes, You Can Learn to Love Your Speaking Voice
So, can you grow to love your speaking voice?
Yes, you can.
You can stop cringing quite so hard. You can hear more of what others already hear in you. You can build a calmer, clearer, stronger voice. You can feel more at home when you speak.
Your voice has carried you through a lot. It may need care. It may need training. It may need permission. And it absolutely deserves your respect.
If you are a midlife business woman who has been hiding your expertise, this is your gentle nudge. Start letting your voice take up the space it deserves. Your message matters. Your work matters. And people need to hear you.
